Phil and Marlo in town to see us on September 16th!

Summer draws to a close and September looms nigh, but we’ve come up with a great idea to bid goodbye to a beautiful season.  Come to our annual September Party in Oyster Bay Cove!  This year Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas will be joining us as guests of honor.  In addition to hearing from this New York power couple, we will be raffling off art, holiday homes, and cooking sessions with personal chefs.  Our “chance auction” will have prizes as diverse as a night at a Mets game and signed Nelson DeMille books – and all to benefit the great work we do to protect the residents of Nassau County from government encroachment on their rights.  To receive an invitation, please call the office at 741-8520.  See you in two weeks!

League of Women Voters wows us with packed program on Constitution Day

If you don’t make it to our fundraiser on Sunday the 16 don’t fear, that’s not the only occasion in September to chat about our democratic tradition.  The League of Women Voters has put together a free program on Monday, September 17 to celebrate Constitution Day and we are co-sponsoring the event.  The morning panel, which takes place at the Nassau County Bar Association from 9 to 11:30 a.m., will include remarks by our very own board member, Mike D’Innocenzo of Hofstra University, who will discuss the evolution of the checks and balances system in the Constitution.  Another of our board members and cooperating attorneys, Marvin Zevin, will deal with changes in constitutional attitudes in Nassau County since 1965.  The evening program will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. at Hofstra with a variety of speakers including prominent lawyers and judges.  Hofstra’s Leon Friedman, a member of our advisory board, and our chapter president and assistant legal director, E. Christopher Murray, will be participating in a panel discussion about Constitutional limits on the War on Terrorism.  This should be an amazing event!  To find out more, please call the office at 741-8520.

Victory in Texas!  Kenneth Foster Lives!

Thursday, August 30

New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty tell us at 6:30 p.m.: Family members and supporters of Kenneth Foster, Jr. are jubilant in the reaction to Texas Governor Rick Perry's announcement today that he would commute the death sentence of Kenneth Foster, who was convicted under the controversial "Law of Parties" for a 1996 murder in which he had no actual involvement. The Board of Pardons and Paroles had recommened clemency by a vote of 6-1. Foster's execution had been scheduled for tonight. In a statement announcing the commutation, Perry said, "I am concerned about Texas law that allowed capital murder defendants to be tried simultaneously and it is an issue I think the Legislature should examine."

Five Towns Forum to host Rachel Meeropol, Attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights

On September 7 at 8 p.m. Rachel Meeropol will be at the Hewlett-Woodmere Library to discuss the White House Gone Wild: Detention, Torture, and Surveillance Post 9/11.  She has handled many important civil liberties cases.  She is the lead lawyer in a class action lawsuit challenging post 9/11 immigration sweeps (Turkman v. Ashcroft).  She is a supporting attorney in a case challenging the false arrests of dozens of antiwar activists (Kunstler v. New York).  She has contributed to or edited several books.  And yes.  She is the granddaughter of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
