September in Blume: Annual September Cocktail Party Announcement

Judy Blume is one of America's most celebrated authors - and she's also one of the most censored! She'll be gracing us with her presence at our 47th annual September Cocktail Party. Save the date now so you can join us on September 14th, 2008 to see Ms. Blume and share some delicious food with your fellow civil libertarians.

And the Winners Are...

The Stand Up for Freedom Art and Essay contest garnered almost 200 entries from bright and concerned high school and middle school students around Nassau County. The sheer number of stellar entries made judging tough, but the four winners truly impressed us with their insight and creativity.

Chloee Etessami, an eighth grader, won the Middle School essay category for her stirring short story about LGBT rights.
Bonnie Schiffman, an eleventh grader, had the winning High School essay with her intensive and thought provoking piece on the rights of political prisoners in times of war.
Abraham Libman, an eighth grader, took the prize for Middle School Art with a multimedia depiction of a caged Bald Eagle behind Lady Liberty's torch.
Nicholas Elias, a tenth grader, receives the High School Art award for his multimedia presentation of the civil liberty themed mural he painted on a wall in his home.

The winners will be honored and presented with their awards at our Annual June Meetings. Meanwhile, you may read excerpts from their pieces and see their art on our website.
