Annual September Party A Huge Success!

Each year, the NYCLU Nassau hosts an afternoon cocktail party
for our friends and supporters. The party,
which usually attracts about 200 of our members and guests, is a great
opportunity to mingle with local civil libertarians and enjoy our homemade
buffet of goodies.
This
year, our distinguished guest of honor was none other than Phil Donahue.
Mr. Donahue has a long history
as an outspoken and passionate human rights and anti-war activist. As
a talk show host, he never hesitated to use his platform
to advance the cause of peace, civil rights and liberties, and it was an
honor to hear him speak at the party.
His stirring speech highlighted the need to sustain civil liberties. He
outlined the "Three Stages of Activism, According to Phil:"
first, you enjoy your activism, the community you're now a part of and your
ability to affect change. Then you get angry, that change is so slow
coming, if it comes at all. Finally, you reach the most important state, the
decision. Now you have to choose to "keep on keeping on" and fighting
the good fight, in spite of the obstacles. He encourages all of us to make
that decision and stay committed to protecting our civil liberties.
After Phil's speech, guests were treated to our chance raffle. They
won, among other things, tickets for two to a Broadway show of their choice,
gift certificates to wonderful local restaurants and tickets to a NY Mets game.
The food was delicious, the prizes divine, and the company nothing less than
inspirational. Our September Parties are not to be missed, so keep your
eye open for your chance to attend next year!
